There are definitely serious issues with the D2R Items game. And with players becoming increasingly frustrated about Blizzard's inability to address them, community manager PezRadar has published a lengthy forum update explaining what's gone wrong, the steps being taken to fix it, how they're going regarding it, and why it might take a while to get things fully sorted."

On Saturday , Pacific times, we had an outage across the globe due to an abrupt and significant increase in traffic" PezRadar explained. "This was a completely new threshold that our servers never had before and not even when they were launched. This was further aggravated by an upgrade we rolled out the previous day with the intention of improving performance in game creation. These two events overwhelmed our global database in a way that it began to run out."

To help ease the load, Blizzard rolled back the Friday update, but the measure proved inadequate--an even bigger rush of traffic caused another issue on Sunday.

The issues continued to be a mess on Monday, when Blizzard changed the settings of Diablo 2's backup global database and then tried to switch to it. After the switch was made Diablo 2's backup database was still running backup processes rather than handling the requests of remote servers.

This issue was resolved on Tuesday, but another record-breaking number of concurrent players same day resulted in further "degraded performance of databases," which database engineers are still working to resolve. The situation is serious enough it is that the Diablo 2: Resurrected team has roped engineers from other divisions of Blizzard to fix minor problems while it concentrates exclusively on "core Server issues."

"We also reached out to our third-party partners as well," PezRadar said.

It is interesting to note that Blizzard's insistence on maintaining the authenticity of the Diablo 2 experience in the remake is the main cause of all these problems. One "legacy service" in particular handles critical functions including "game creation/joining, updating/reading/filtering game lists, verifying game server health, and reading characters from the database."

It was updated and optimized to work with Diablo 2 Resurrected but is still built on 20 years old technology. It's also having problems adapting to "modern player behavior."

"In 2001 there wasn't nearly enough content available on web regarding how to play Diablo 2 'correctly' (Baal is available for XP as well as Pindleskin/Ancient Swers for magic items, etc.)," PezRadar said. "Today but, a beginner can find the most amazing content creators that can teach them how to play the game in a variety of ways.

A lot of them involve a lot of database load that is creating, loading, and destroying Diablo 2 Resurrected buy items games with a rapid pace. We did anticipate this, with players making fresh characters on new servers, and working hard in order to find their magic items -- we completely underestimated what that we learned from beta testing."
